ADOPTION

International Adoption

Adoptive and prospective adoptive parent(s) must comply with U.S. immigration procedures, initiated through the USCIS in the United States in order to bring an adoptive child to the U.S. Simply locating a child in a foreign country and going to the U.S. Embassy to obtain a visa for the child will not meet these requirements. An orphan cannot be brought to the United States without a visa, which is based upon a USCIS approved petition (form I-600).

Domestic Adoption

For domestic adoptions, there are four types: adoptions through a private agency, through a lawyer or counselor, stepparent adoptions, and through a public agency or foster care.

At some point in the process, the court system will be involved in an adoption. It is important to involve an attorney as soon as possible.

Adoption laws must be followed to the letter in order for here to be a successful adoption. Indeed, in some situations, failure to precisely follow the law can result in the adoption being void or even criminal charges. Ignorance is no excuse.
